Thoughts: Curtsies & Conspiracies is the second book in Gail Carriger’s Finishing School series. I was lukewarm on book one, Etiquette & Espionage, but curious about Curtsies & Conspiracies. I listened to the audio back in May, and while I really enjoyed it, I don’t have that much to say about it.
The plot was fantastic. There are a few mysteries that Sophronia is trying to solve, as well as plenty of action, especially with someone trying to kidnap Sophronia’s best friend. We also get to see more of the world and what the school’s role is in it. This I particularly enjoyed because it allowed us to see a glimpse of familiar (and favorite) characters from the Parasol Protectorate series.
My biggest concern is that Soap is such an awesome character, but he comes from a very different social class than Sophronia. I’m curious how this is going to be resolved without being either heartbreaking or unbelievable for the world the book is set in. I have faith that Carriger can make it work.
Favorite Moment: There is a cute, little mechanical pet that crawls under someone’s dress and burps steam. It was a funny moment.
WTF moment: A vampire has his tether snapped….
Narrator: The narrator really made this book for me. She did a fantastic job and was exactly what I wanted when I decided to do audio instead of print with book 2.
Overall: Exactly what I wanted from a Gail Carriger YA.
