Graphic Novel: This Sorrowful Life (Walking Dead Vol. 6) by Robert Kirkman
Summary: Trapped in a town surrounded by madmen, Rick must find a way out or die trying. Meanwhile, back at the prison, the rest of the survivors come to grips with the fact Rick may be dead, and a major turning point in the series is reached. Collects issues #31-#36.
Thoughts: This is the sixth installment in one of my favorite zombie series. Even though it is about a zombie apocalypse the story mostly focuses on the psychological toll it takes on the survivors. Each volume feels fresh, because it takes the story to places I don’t expect. Much like the previous volumes, this one features a wide cast of characters, interpersonal drama, and plenty of violence–and not just the zombies. Also, people die as often as they do in Westeros.
In my last review, I mentioned that I hoped Michonne would get revenge on a man who did terrible things to her. She did get her revenge. And it made me incredibly uncomfortable. I think it was supposed to. The level of violence went way beyond what would have been satisfying revenge. The end is also surprising–Rick’s character is constantly evolving and I’m very interested in where the story will go in the future.
Moments I Loved: I thought the moment when Rick returns to the prison is really well done.
WTF Moments: Michonne gets her revenge.
Artwork: I love the black and white artwork, but be warned, both the story and the artwork is very violent.
Overall: Somehow these graphic novels stay fresh. I can’t wait to read the next one.
